This was the first weekend of the 2015-2016 season for the Somerville Winter Farmers Market. This is my favorite winter market because there are two floors of vendors and lots of organic options. Also, it doesn’t start until 9:30am, for those of us having trouble getting out of bed on a Saturday morning 😉
Here’s my haul:
- Puritan Pride mead from 1634 Meadery Ipswich, MA
- Grass-fed stew beef from Lilac Hedge Farm Berlin, MA
- Wild haddock from Jordan Brothers Seafood Stoughton, MA
- Maple (!) fromage blanc from Foxboro Cheese Co. Foxborough, MA
- Adirondack red potatoes from Heron Pond Farm South Hampton, NH
- Gorgeous purple carrots from Misty Brook Farm Albion, ME
I spent a total of $51.00 and my purchases were sourced an average of 64 miles from my home, with the farthest being the purple carrots growing 199 miles away. (note: the wild haddock was obviously caught in the ocean, but I used the company’s headquarters for my calculations)
On my way out, I scored some more ‘shop local’ points by stopping into the lovely Arts at the Armory Cafe and picking up a latte to go.
Love this post about farmer’s market! Local farms are the best for healthy food.
